The children have already started to learn about their new topic:
'All Creatures Great and Small!'
and are very excited with the new play resources, activities and learning opportunities available in class to begin our topic.
Please see the topic plan below for details of our learning.
Measuring the size of animals
Using some information about the length of animals, the children were able to measure out and compare the length of animals. For the smaller creatures, the children used multilink cubes (Year R) and cm/mm (Year 1) to make or draw the length of animals such as hedgehogs, robins and butterflies. They then compared which was the longest and shortest.
For the longer animals, we used m sticks (Year 1) and then trundle wheels to measure out the huge length of some of the longest animals on the planet. Due to the rain we were unable to use the playground so unfortunately we could not measure out the length of the blue whale- the largest animal on the planet. We did measure elephants, tigers, hippos and snakes!
Our Trip to the Farm 13.3.17
We had a wonderful trip to Mrs Bates' farm! The children learnt lots about cows, chickens and sheep today on our trip. The children were able to stroke and feed the new baby lambs, look for the eggs that the chickens had laid, have a seat inside the farm tractor, learn more about cattle as well as seeing the new calves and play in the fields. They had a wonderful time in the spring sunshine! Thank you to all of the helpers and to Mrs Bates and her team!
Following on from our farm trip and further learning about farm animals in class, the children started their Art/DT project with Mrs Merrick. The children have had lots of practise at weaving on the giant loom as well as on a smaller scale. Then they were able to start their own woven farm picture. More pictures to follow once the work is finished!
The 'Mud Kitchen' is open for business!
The children in class 1 had great fun in our 'Mud Kitchen'. They enjoyed digging in the mud, mixing mud with water to their own special recipes, cooking their ingredients on the stove and playing with their friends.
Spring Term 1 2017
Welcome back to school!
Class 1 have come back from their Christmas break ready to set sail on the open seas to learn all about their new topic of 'Pirates'!
Please follow the link below to find our topic plan:
We have already started our new topic by writing some amazing list poems entitled:
'Some things we would find in a pirate's pocket'
The children had the most amazing ideas from a sleeping parrot to a spare hook to an old treasure chest!
To start off our topic lessons, we have been looking at 'where in the world are we?'. We have learnt about the hot and cold places of the world and the fact that there are 7 continents and 5 oceans.
We then moved onto learning about sailors who travelled the world. We had a go at completing lots of different jobs that they would have done on board their ships using our role play boat. We also played 'The Captain is Coming!' game outside.
Pirate Day 7.2.17
The children in Class 1 have had a wonderful day learning about pirates. They all engaged in lots of different activities including: going on a treasure hunt, a trust game about walking the plank, transferring treasure from one container to another using drain pipes, making a treasure map pizza, pirate crafts and sorting treasure using magnets. We then enjoyed a pirate feast at the end of the day!
