Autumn term 2018

Welcome back to school after the half term break!

This half term our topic is 'Autumn and festivals'. Please follow the link to the curriculum plan.

Remember, remember the 5th November....

This afternoon (5.11.18) we learnt all about Guy Fawkes and his plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament with King James I inside! We acted out the story with our friends.

Remembrance Day

We have spent a week learning all about why we wear poppies in November. We completed lots of work from the story 'Where the Poppies now Grow' and created lots of beautiful artwork to show why we should remember the wars. We invited our parents and members of our families in to school to see our work.

We created artwork using pastels and paint. Each child made a poppy using a cupcake case!
We looked at real medals belonging to Mrs Pratley's grandad Jim who fought in the Second World War. We then made our own medals. The Year 1 children used a thesaurus to think of words to describe the soldiers.

We're going on a leaf hunt...

We have been looking at the book 'We're going on a leaf hunt' during our English lessons this week. We have also been learning about why leaves change colour in autumn and how different trees have leaves that look very different. During our forest school session today (21.11.18) we went on our own leaf hunts to match what we have been writing. We also found the trees that we had been writing about too!

We used leaf indentification cards to to work out which leaves we had found. We then took our favourite leaves back to school and made leaf crowns!

Christmas Craft Afternoon 3.12.18

Every year, we spend a whole afternoon in the hall with the children from Classes 2 and 3 making Christmas crafts. Each member of staff chooses a craft and the children select which ones they would like to make.

Decorating the Christmas Tree!

We have a large Christmas tree in class that the children have enjoyed decorating each day. Our virtual advent calendar also had a Christmas tree to decorate. The children very much enjoyed taking it in turns with their friends to add decorations to the tree.

Our Design/Technology projects:

This term, we have been learning how to sew. We first designed our owl and chose which fabric and accessories we would like on our work. We then carefully stitched feathers on the front of our owls as well as adding features and wings. We then decided how we would like the background to look using stampers, collage materials, oil pastels and metallic pens. We finally evaluated our work.

Keep popping back to see what we are learning this half term. Below is our work from last half term.

Welcome to all of our new children in Year R and welcome back to the Year 1s.

We are busy making new friends and learning the routines of the classroom as we enter the start of the Autumn Term. We are very proud of how well the children are coming into school and how well they are using the resources in the classroom.

We have a new member of Class 1, our class pet 'Bones'. He will be coming home with a different child each weekend to have lots of fun! The children will be able to record their adventures with 'Bones' in his diary and then share this with their friends in class.
Our topic for this half term is 'Marvellous Me!'. Please follow the link below to our topic plan:
We have been learning about the different parts of our body. We have specifically looked at our faces and the names of all of the parts. The children had a go at changing their faces using an IPad app.
We also had a go at making our faces out of food with all of the correct parts!
In our RE lessons, we have been thinking about how different religions welcome babies into their families. As part of our learning, Rev. Cannon Richard performed a christening for us to see over at church. We enjoyed learning about the different aspects of this celebration and had a go at performing a baptism back at school.
We also brought in precious photos and objects from when we were born to have a look at.
The children in Class 1 have been looking at self-portraits in their art lessons. They have worked incredibly hard to produce the most amazing portraits! They used charcoal and paint (that they mixed themselves) to add the features and details to their faces. Aren't their self portraits AMAZING?
We have enjoyed having the mud kitchen open over this half term so that we could bake, explore and play with our friends.
Keep popping back to see what we are learning!
