Autumn 2022

Autumn 2 2022

Welcome back to school after the half term break. This half term we are learning all about the season of autumn and the festivals that happen at this time of year.

Please follow the links to our half term letter and topic planner:

We have been learning all about the Hindu and Sikh festival of Diwali. We have been reading the story of Rama and Sita and we had a go at acting it out.

We made our own Rangoli patterns and diva lamps to help to celebrate this festival of light.

We have also learnt about why we celebrate bonfire night on 5th November. We heard the story of how Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament to kill the king. Luckily he didn't succeed! We all had a go at acting out the story.

The Year One children had a go at finding evidence from different picture sources to prove some facts about Guy Fawkes. They had to look very carefully for the right picture to prove what they wanted to say.

We have been enjoying our forest school sessions in the community orchard. The children were asked to take photos of the signs of autumn. Here are some of their pictures:

In class we have been learning about different trees and how to tell which tree is which. We used maps to travel around forest school to find different trees. We also thought about whether they were evergreen or deciduous.

The children collected different shaped leaves which they used to make pictures, completed some leaf rubbing back at school and which Year 1 had a go at classifying to work out which tree they had come from.

We learnt all about Remembrance day. We read the story 'Where the Poppies now grow' and thought about how the soldiers would be feeling at different points in the story. We noticed how dark the pictures in the story got through the war. We made medals for the soldiers. The children in Year 1 wrote words to describe the brave soldiers. We used apples and the bottom of bottles to print poppies to remember all of those who fought in wars to keep us safe.

We have loved our forest school sessions this half term! We have been down in the sun, the pouring rain and in the frost! We have enjoyed acting out the stories that we wrote in a similar style to 'We're going on a leaf hunt!', watching the trees change through the season and taking parts in crafts/activities. We each made a little clay hedgehog when we were thinking about what animals do in the winter time.

We have been learning about the American artist Georgia O'Keeffe. We looked at how she likes to paint little things in a big way to show everyone how beautiful little things can be. We practised our water colour skills by painting autumn leaves.

We then looked carefully at one particular leaf and drew it as big as we could on our paper. We used wax crayon to colour the leaf and then water colour to add a contrasting background colour.

We have been practising our sewing skills through our DT project this term. We have designed and made our own hedgehog. We chose the colour of the fabric, the thread and accessories. We concentrated really hard and enjoyed sewing the spikes for our hedgehogs.

We were very happy with the results!

Autumn 1 2022

Welcome to all of our lovely new Reception children and welcome back to the wonderful Year 1s! Our topic this half term is 'Marvellous Me!'.

Please follow the link below to our half term plan and letter.

We have had lots of fun getting to know our new friends and exploring the classroom and outside areas. It has been a very busy first week!

We have been thinking about our homes and what a home needs inside it. The children used a variety of objects to have a go at making a home. They thought of everything from a shower to a cat flap!

We have been learning about how families can be different. Some people have large families and some have small families. We read two amazing books about families and made some button people to match one of the stories. We completed an activity to show everyone who lives with us at home. Each family looked so different!

We have been thinking about what is inside our bodies. We drew around each other and then drew inside what we thought was inside our bodies. We had lots of great ideas!

We looked more closely at our skeletons and tried to guess which bones in our bodies we could see on some Xrays. We made our own Xrays and had a go at skeleton jigsaw puzzles.

We have been reading the story of 'The Tiger Who Came to Tea'. The children have enjoyed role playing the story.

We have had fun with lots of tiger crafts. We have made tiger paw prints, tiger masks, a giant painted tiger and some play dough tigers too!

We had a wonderful session this morning (10.10.22) learning about five types of harvest: grain, flock, sea, earth and garden. The children spent time at each station to learn more and to complete a little activity e.g. making a clay pot, decorating a fish, planting a seed (these will come home this week), trying some different breads and weaving. They behaved beautifully and were very interested in each station.
Huge thanks to all of the volunteers who came to help and to Mrs Ferguson for organising such a great event.
